Hey Guy, I am building a 1937 Ford Coupe into a Hot Rod. I have a normally aspirated 460 and a C6 trans, that I am going to drop into it. My question is what gear ratio should I look for in a rear end so I not tachin’ 5 grand at 65 MPH on the freeway? Monte – Las Vegas NV
Well Monte, With gas prices edging up once again no one wants to waste fuel. The days of the 4:11 rear ends for street applications are probably gone. With that big 460 you should be flyin’ down I-15 thru Vegas at 70 mph and be tachin’ less than 2500 rpm. That will keep the gas consumption to a minimum. Check out the Hot Rod Digest calculators on this web page and based on tire size you should be able to determine which gear ratio will get you the rpm’s and gas mileage you desire. Hot Rod Digests project build is also using a 460 with a C6, and we are putting in a 3:55 Posi Traction unit. Good Luck with your build and as always thanks for checking in with Hot Rod Digest.
